scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Pakistani Fashion'/>
New Fashion Models

Much has been said and written about the inaugural Lux Style Awards. The stream of criticism doesn't seem to stop flowing. The reason for this constant onslaught, perhaps, is the amount of mistakes – in fact, blunders - committed by the management committee, the jury and the sponsors of the awards. Every look at the awards reveals a new point of contention.

Various reasons call for a neutral inquiry and assessment. As opposed to the common notion held by many people, we should not take the awards very seriously. Before the precedent to accept all wrongs is set and becomes a tradition, like all rotten things in Pakistan, we must try to correct it. Fashion, style, design and lifestyle are industries which provide a livelihood to millions of people. An international organisation such as Lever Brothers Pakistan (LBP) has graciously recognised the movers and shakers of these industries, therefore credit should go to deserving people. LBP's decision to initiate the awards is a giant leap in the right direction, but we'd only like it to continue if the awards intend to be just and transparent.

The culture of patronising and nepotism should be brought to an end, at least in the creative arts field, which self- righteously claims to have more conscience and enlightenment than the rest of society. It's time we tried to rise above our personal biases and pettiness. To begin with, the nominations left a lot of names to be desired. The main criterion for selection was the works produced during the year 2001, Naheed Chaudhry, Senior Brand Manager – Lux, announced at the launch ceremony. Later Frieha Altaf, the producer and conceptualiser of the awards confirmed the criteria to me in person. Participants, presented by Lever Brothers and Frieha, were to earn at least three votes from the 11 member jury in order to garner a nomination.

Marina Khan was nominated as the Best TV Actress and she was quoted as saying, "I have not done anything in the year 2001, apart from 'Marina's Kitchen.'. Her words are a good indicator as to how seriously the jury and proposers were taking their responsibilty. It also reveals their awareness about the industries which they were going to recognise.

Sadia Imam was gifted The Best TV Actress award. It was supposedly a viewers' choice award which was decided through polls via various media. According to a member of the jury, who requested anonymity, Sadia did not get the most votes, but was given the award to reconstruct her image after her alleged involvement in an embezzlement scandal. So much for transparency and fairness!

The cinema categories decisions truly reflected the state of the film industry in Pakistan. Shehzad Gul of Evernew Films won the award for the Best Producer on his film 'Ghar Kab Aao Ge.' However, according to Evernew Films, the film was released on January 9, 2000 and not in the year 2001. Is it a case of ignorance or a case of nepotism; Sajjad Gul, brother of Shehzad Gul and a film producer himself, was one of the judges? Freiha Altaf's reasoning sounds a little odd, "Ghar Kab Aao Ge was considered because it is still running in theatres." Using that as a yardstick, Indian cinema classic, 'Sholay,' should appear in every Indian cinema awards show because it has been running in a theatre in Gujrat since its release in 1976.

That brings us to another interesting story. Nabila was considered for a nomination in the Best Stylist category. She submitted her portfolio on one condition; that her Hair Show 2000 production, held in November 2000, be a part of the work that she was being judged by. She was refused, on the pretext that only work produced in 2001 were being considered. She pulled out gracefully. Isn't it a case of decision dichotomy?

The Best Bridal Designer and Best Female Model award decisions left every one completely floored. The former was shared by Bunto Kazmi and Faiza Sami, while Vaneeza and Iraj shared the latter. Sharing the award in each category undermined the work of both winners. This novel method was invented and adopted because, according to a reliable insider at LBP, a judge had insisted on awarding Faiza Sami as well or threatened to walk out. Has anyone ever heard of an excellence award divided in half? How is a tie-decision possible with an 11 member jury? That shows the awards was a game for the parties involved instead of a serious business.

In the fashion section, one important category was completely ignored. Choreographers play an important role in the construction of a fashion show. At the press conference, LBP proudly stated that it had, in show of support for the industry, sponsored the first fashion shows of Maheen and Sana & Safinaz. This fact seems enough to illustrate the unexpected exclusion of the category. Perhaps it was Frieha's insecurity because she would have been a contender or again, a lack of seriousness?

According to Frieha Altaf and Fifi Haroon, co-organiser, the jury sat on February 07, 2002 to review the portfolios and make decisions. "They began at 10 a.m. and got up at 3 p.m.," said Frieha. Excluding five viewers' choice categories, two Lifetime Achievement award and the Icon of The Year decision, there were 76 nominees in 17 categories. We did the math and it seems that the judges spent roughly four minutes on each portfolio. This leaves one's head reeling, if we think of the speed with which they assessed the nominee portfolios.

Here's another glaring example of their inconsistent implementation of the judging process. Shaheen Saeed, sent her portfolio to Lever Brothers offices at 10 a.m on Feb 07 but was phoned at 7 p.m by Frieha to inquire about the whereabouts of her portfolio. Despite the fact that the jury seemingly had nothing to evaluate Shaheen by, she was nominated in the Best Stylist category.

When Frieha and Fifi were contacted separately to comment, they both declined giving the secrecy clause as a reason. "The jury's decision is the final one and could not be challenged," said Freiha and Fifi. "It happens all the time. Even Oscars are open to debate," Fifi continued to explain. Credentials of the jury members are subject to debate and they proved utterly insufficient to judge various categories. For instance, one would like to know how Yousuf Mirza Baig, Sajjad Gul and Satish Anand are deemed competent to judge fashion, art or architecture.

The incompetence of the jury became evident when Shamoon Khan of Khaadi was given the Best Menswear Designer Award. He is a textile designer who has, without a doubt, revolutionised hand-weave in Pakistan, but he's definitely not a fashion designer. A well-deserved award in the wrong category meant a gross undermining of his contribution.

A look at the presentation reveals confusion, chaos and thorough lack of planning and coordination. First of all there was no build-up to the Lux Style Awards event. Categories mindlessly followed each other. The impact of bridal category along with a fashion sequence became diluted by the opening of dinner. Also, the Humanitarian Award along with the Icon and Lifetime Achievement Awards were announced during dinner. Definitely an insult to the legends.

Jewelry Designs

No matter what your size or style, please approach us with your needs and we will try our best to take care of you. Treading this cyclical trend, our top of the league designer Tarun Tahiliani held a fund-raiser in association with Lakme and the Indian Cancer Society. The show titled Sirens from Heaven was held as a cause against cancer and collections from the show would go to those who can't afford a treatment.

The Sirens from Heaven collection boasted a range of clothing for the modern Indian woman. Tahiliani showcased Indian and western outfits that were brought under the hammer for a select guest list.

A very able and vibrant Sita Raina auctioned the outfits that ranged from dull beiges to bright reds. Dresses and sarees that were anything but ordinary and meant for the woman of substance drew thunderous applause from the crowds.
Splat! That's the sound of me falling flat on my face. Gloat. That's what all of you who got irritated by my previous article will do. Why is that you ask?

Well, remember my famous last words in this very magazine? Recall the lines that laid bare my total lack of interest in babies and all maternalthings. Appreciate the fact that, I risked the wrath of all friends who have ever crossed my path with a baby in tow. Created paranoia in the minds of all mothers who visit my home. All for the sake of truth.

The truth is I have probably ended up creating my very own version of Murphy's Law, and it goes something like this. If you feel nothing for babies and admit it on paper, you will miss your period. When the issue goes in print, you will be staring at the calendar in disbelief. By the time it hits the stands, you will keel over in the loo as two very clear pink lines announce that life will never be the same again. Parenthood has arrived at our doorstep.

We, who adore our DVD player, our annual vacation and impromptu dinner plans, who had always discussed this phase of our life with a 'do we really have to discuss this right now?', have entered baby-land amidst sighs of relief from excited grandparents-to-be, and a rapid-fire volley of advice from all corners of the world.

While surprise gave way to stupor, gratitude followed this tremendous sense of guilt at not exactly yodeling with joy at the good news. Of course, these past few weeks have just been spent adjusting to the concept, which for me at least came sooner with the bouts of sickness and nausea. I pass the mornings and evenings paying homage to the sink as the other half hovers around, concerned and solicitous. Wondering what on earth could wreak such havoc in my system when there is no bump to show for it. At the same time, I can't help like an appendage to this child of mine. It's as if I've ceased being an individual and am now, only a mother. There are times, specially when nausea has ripped my system to shreds, that I just want to step out and take a breather. Just talk shop with friends. About their lives, our lives, the world, our work – non-maternal, non-paternal, non-natal stuff. But I guess everyone's just being solicitous so well, it's okay at the end of the day. But thank god for friends who still have issues like curfews and lovers' tiffs to discuss! And a partner who still talks to the woman he married, not just the mother he's learning to live with.

Beauty Tips

Good lighting--Proper lighting is essential for the most natural makeup applications. Do a lighting check in the room. Are there windows on both sides? Do you have equal light? Is there a single light above your mirror casting a shadow down on your face? If the lighting is not even or the best possible, buy a portable makeup mirror and your problem will be solved.
Tan face--Use one of the many excellent bronzers on the market to give you a kiss of the sun. Forget getting a tan on your face.

Less is more--Wear a very sheer foundation and keep the rest of your make-up minimal. Less is more in the summertime. Wear a little concealer just on the areas that need it and no foundation if you can get away with it.

Chapped lips--Keep your lips moisturized at all times and avoid licking lips especially when in the sun. If you have flakes on your lips, exfoliate gently with a little almond oil and a soft toothbrush.

What color orange is best for your skin color?--If you are fair try apricot, sheer peach, or soft corals. It you are medium choose soft rust, terra cotta, and tawny brown. Olive skins look best in copper, bronze and brick and dark skin will glow with deep russet, burnished orange and deep russet.

For a perfect lip shade--Mix and match lipsticks directly on your lips...you will be amazed at how many colors you can create. It is said that Marilyn Monroe wore 5 different shades of lipstick to get her mouth to look the way it did.

Precise spot covering of blemishes--After applying foundation, cover spot with a concealer using a small, pointy brush, then set with powder, dabbing gently with a powder puff.

Clean out your make-up drawers--Get rid of all your old and out dated make-up. Put your winter colors in a separate bag and put any soft, pastel colors in another. Get a makeover at one of the finer department stores to try out the new spring colors. See if what you already have matches any of them and pick up a couple of new colors while you are there. Soft, almost not there make-up is in for Spring, so learn how to apply it lightly yet completely.

Shape your brows--Don't let unruly brows take over your face. Spend the time shaping them and tweeze them at least every other day to keep them in shape. Follow these steps to get the perfect brow: Groom your brows by using an eyebrow brush (or old toothbrush). Brush them in the opposite direction, then brush back. Using precision tweezers, pluck any stray eyebrow hairs, working along the natural brow line. For painless tweezing, do this right after a steamy shower. The brow should begin directly above the inside corner of the eye and should end at a line from the outside corner of the nose past the outside corner of the eye. Apply color to sparse areas. Use a shade of eyeshadow close to your natural brow color. Using a slightly stiff small eyeshadow brush, fill in areas lightly using feathering strokes. If too much color is applied, brush with your eyebrow brush (or old toothbrush) to remove the extra color. You can use an eyebrow pencil, just be sure to go lightly to avoid the "painted on" look.

Get rid of clumps--For the best, non-clumpy, natural looking lashes: Use light layers of mascara, carefully separating your lashes between coats with an eyelash comb or small toothbrush. Metal combs work the best for this.

Cover redness--Use a yellow-toned cream to neutralize redness instead of a concealer to cover blemishes, red blotches or eyeglass marks.

Plump up sunken cheeks--Apply a lighter shade of foundation or highlighter to the hollows of your cheeks.

Hate that "lipstick-y" look?--Fill in your entire lip with a lip pencil only.

Puffy eyes--Place chilled tea bags or sliced cucumbers over your eyes.

Widen close-set eyes--Sweep a pearl-white shadow on inner lid corners, blending upward. Follow with a medium color on center of lids and a deeper tone on outer third of lids. Make sure to blend well.

To cover melasma (mask of pregnancy): Use lavender concealer. Apply foundation that is one or two shades darker than skin tone.

Under eye circles--Mix a bit of light blue eye shadow with your moisturizer; apply under your eyes. The blue color helps diffuse light. Follow with foundation or light concealer.

Eyebrows too dark?--Stroke a concealer pencil over them, followed by translucent powder. It will lighten the brows without really changing the color.

Too much eye shadow--Don't start over. Just dip a small blush brush in bronzing powder and sweep over entire lid. Bronzing powder is a neutral tint, so it will just soften the color of your shadow without changing it.

Eyebrows too light?--Have them tinted a darker shade. This will frame your eyes and if you are not good with makeup this will look the most natural. Have it done every six weeks or so. You can also purchase tinting kits at beauty supply stores if you feel confident you can do it yourself.

Lining the inside rim of your eyes--Use a eye pencil that states "Kohl". This means it is gentle and made to be used on the inside rim.

Drooping Lips--Cover the corners of your mouth concealer. Use a lip pencil to subtly extend lip corners upward. Then fill in color.

Cover a blemish--Apply over the counter acne medication directly to blemish using a cotton swab. Then apply a yellow-based concealer with a small brush. Dust with translucent powder.

Brighten up your face--For a natural, subtle, flush of color reach for bronzing powder with a large, fluffy brush and dust a light layer on forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.

Instant bigger, brighter eyes--Line upper and lower lash lines with white eyeliner, tracing as close to lash line as possible. Your eyes will look larger and more alert!

Taking photos?--Never wear frosted lipstick, eye shadow or blush. Wear classic clothing and avoid jewelry that will distract from your face.

Make your eyes look bigger--Use a white eyeliner pencil and line your eyes under your bottom lashes. Smudge. Follow with black mascara.

For super thick lashes--Lightly powder lashes to give the mascara a coat to cling to. Let dry for at least one minute. Apply second coat.

Brown eyes--Wear eyeshadow shades like: gunmetal, charcoal, mustard, camel and gold.

Green eyes--Wear eyeshadow shades like: espresso, chocolate, heather, and hazy violet.

Blue eyes--Wear eyeshadow shades like: Cinnamon, rust, eggplant, and amethyst.

Make redness vanish--Reach for soft pink to make the whites look bigger and brighten bloodshot eyes. Sweep soft pink shadow on the inside corners of eyes using an upward motion and fluffy shadow brush. Make sure to blend well.

Ultra sheer foundation--Mix your foundation and a moisturizer together for a light foundation. You can also use a dampened cosmetic sponge for the sheerest, most natural look.

Bring out your eye color--Avoid matching your eye shadow to the color or your eyes. Use complementary colors or opposite colors instead.

Make your lipstick last!--Cover your lips with foundation and powder first. Outline with a lip pencil then dust with a little powder again. Apply lipstick and powder again lightly. Reapply your lipstick and it will last all day!

Eye and lip pencils--If they are too soft, refrigerate for 30 minutes before using.

Over 25--Stay away from any and all frosted eye shadows. They make the skin around your eyes appear old and wrinkled even if you aren't old!

Forget your eye shadow?--Use your blush as a contouring color. Lightly sweep the color on your browbone.

Slenderize a round face--Sweep bronzer over temples, cheekbones and under your chin. Use a fluffy brush and light powder to highlight forehead, cheekbones and tip of chin.

Get rid of laugh lines--Use a concealer pencil and draw three horizontal lines (like cat whiskers) next to the corner of your mouth. Sponge blend in an upward direction for an instant lift.

Widen your eyes--Eliminate redness and widen eyes by stroking a light layer of shimmery white eye shadow over the entire lid.

Pick the right pink for your skin tone--If your skin is fair, choose pinks that are cool like bubble gum. If your skin is medium, choose pinks that are plum or wine colored. If your skin is olive, choose brown-based pinks. If your skin is dark, choose pinks that are blue-based like fushia or orchid.

Whiten your teeth--Change your shade of lipstick and brighten your smile. If your teeth are greyish, reach for warm shades like bronze or copper. If your teeth are more on the yellow side, pick cool, blue-based shades. FYI--There are many different shades of tooth color and no one has naturally white teeth!

Pakistani Fashion

Vinny's Winning Ways : A Profile of Vaneeza Ahmed

by Umbereen Beg Mirza

While I wait for Vaneeza to emerge from her shower, I have an opportunity to take a sneak peek around her apartment. Its bright and airy, bursting with colour, exotic knick knacks thrown about- generally exuding self-confidence and a certain savoir-faire in matters decorative. On a little bookshelf, guides on raising dogs jostle against Ken Follet novels, Marvel comics and books and Islam and Feminism. These, then, are my first clues about the person behind the model.

But before I have time to scout around more, Vaneeza appears, shower fresh and bare-faced, she complains about a recent haircut and then immediately asks after my sick grandmother- consideration being a trait Vinny has in abundance as I am about to discover.

We quickly race through the routine questions- when, where and how it all began. So, for those of you who didn't already know, Vaneeza returned from Germany at 18, and decided to go to Kinnaird College, as her medical school plans were thwarted by a lack of high school physics. A similar technicality ended hopes of going to NCA after she graduated from K.C. with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. She had started modeling causally while at K.C., and when offers came along, she slipped easily into the model role, with an innate practicality that has served her well over the years. Her modeling career so far has led to fashion shows, print modeling, commercials and now TV dramas. In fact, Vaneeza is currently co-producing a telefilm based on Mohsin Hamid's wonderfully trenchant novel, Mothsmoke. She will also play the role of Mumtaz- the society belle with a difference.

Her decision to become a model is not something that Vaneeza has any regrets over. Over the past seven years, she has been a part of an industry in full throttle. Fashion designers have evolved from Aunties with karigars in their basements, to young, professionally-trained people who know how to cut, and have a strong aesthetic sense. Similarly make-up artists have become conscious of a need for different styles. Fashion photographers today are a different breed than photographers of a decade ago. Cable television has also revolutionized desi society, creating an appetite for a different approach to fashion and entertainment in general. Clearly she has enjoyed the experience, and says that modeling has given her a huge amount of self-confidence and faith in her own abilities. But on the other hand, she knows that the ideal model is nothing more than a canvas for the designer or stylist. And one senses that Vaneeza is ready for more. She has been toying with the idea of retiring from modeling in a year or so.

Her studies in Psychology have not been in vain- she understands that she is a product that must be marketed shrewdly. She agrees to do only a few commercials a year, knowing that she can charge her client that little bit extra for exclusivity. She is also a very hands-on person. Before taking on a project she likes to discuss the entire advertising campaign with her client. She wants to know what type of media would give her the best exposure. Even during photo sessions, she is quite happy to give the photographers suggestions about lighting. Vaneeza even had ideas on how to make this interview more interesting! She suggested that for a true profile it may be more apt to have other people talk about her, rather than let her babble on all day (her words!). However, it's obvious that the controlling aspect of her personality is not about ego. She's not interested in being right, she's interested in delivering a better product- be that a modeling assignment or an interview. That may be an effect of her star sign- Cancer.

She displays several other attributes of Cancer. She is extremely practical and level-headed. She easily admits to not owning any designer clothes (except for the ones that are gifts) as they're too expensive. Rather than buying Gucci and Prada shoes, she preferred to buy an apartment, and an about-to-be-acquired-at-any-moment car. On her frequent trips to places as exotic as Poland and Malaysia, she only picks up things for her house. In fact, Vinny is quite a homebody, often opting to stay at home with a few close friends, her pregnant cat and a trio of goldfish, rather than mingling with the Karachi crowd. Although she's hardly a recluse - the phone rings incessantly while I'm there, and friends, including Ali Azmat, keep popping their heads into the room to know if she's done yet.

Vinny is supremely self-assured and well-adjusted. She knows who she is and is comfortable with that. She has no issues about walking into Gulf plaza in her jeans and sleeveless shirt, or of going to weddings in her belly-baring saris. If some man's going to lust after her bare arms or bare midriff, that's his problem as far as Vinny is concerned. On the topic of men, Vinny has little to say. If the right one comes around at the right time, that's fine, if not, that's fine too. But she is convinced that she will give up working once she is married. She strongly believes in the stay-at-home-mom. Oh, and in case you're wondering about the books on feminism, they were her contribution to celebrating International Women's Day.

Although she denies any feminist tendencies, Vaneeza truly believes in the independent woman. She's grateful for the freedom that her modeling career has given her, and believes it's a great way for other young women to achieve self-reliance and confidence. She also says that the industry is actually quite a "clean" one. Although she feels that many parents may hesitate before letting their daughters have their turn in front of the camera for precisely the independence that modeling confers. "Look at me", she says, "twenty-nine, not married, living by myself, I must be a parent's worst nightmare." But looking at Vaneeza curled up on her sofa, letting her hair dry naturally in the sea breeze, admitting to calling her mother to solve servant problems, never wanting to leave Pakistan, except maybe to live in New York-she seems the very picture of wholesomeness.
